The North Texas Film Critics Association has named their top film and actor picks for 2015.
Brie Larson took best actress for her gut-wrenching turn in Lenny Abrahamson’s “Room” as a captive mother trying to protect her son, while Leonardo DiCaprio won best actor for his equally unsettling role in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s latest visual masterpiece, “The Revenant.” Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who also worked on last year’s Oscar winning “Birdman,” won for his work on the film as well.
Ridley Scott took best director for “The Martian,” which also won best picture. The Matt Damon–starring film was expected to be an awards season frontrunner but has fallen short of expectations thus far.
However, a strong awards season contender, Cary Fukunaga’s “Beasts of No Nation,” received some recognition with a supporting actor win for Idris Elba. “The Hateful Eight” star Jennifer Jason Leigh won best supporting in the female category for her sadistic role in Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film.
“Son of Saul,” about a Jewish worker in a World War II concentration camp, won best foreign film, while “Inside Out” took animated, and “Amy” took the documentary slot.
Film fans will see how the NTCA’s winners shake out against the ultimate in film accolades when the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards are announced Jan. 14. In addition, a major precursor to the Oscars, the Golden Globes, will be aired this Sunday, Jan. 10.
