American Psycho, a musical version of Bret Easton Ellis' novel about a Wall Street banker who is also a psychopathic killer. Duncan Sheik ("Spring Awakening") is writing the score, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will do the book.
Babes in Arms, a revival of the 1937 musical, with a score by Rodgers and Hart and a new book by Joe DiPietro. A reading with Rosie O'Donnell and Shuler Hensley was held in May 2009 in Manhattan. Randy Skinner directs and choreographs. Variety reports that O'Donnell will be starring.
The Band Wagon, a stage version of the 1953 movie musical about a Hollywood song-and-dance man returning to Broadway. An earlier version produced at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego under the title "Dancing in the Dark" ran through April 13, 2008. Douglas Carter Beane is writing the book, and the score employs the songs of Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz. The property has been reconceived with Cheyenne Jackson for the lead role. An industry reading of the new version was held in late October 2008.
Bare, a "pop opera" about two gay students at a Catholic school, with music by Damon Intrabartolo and lyrics by Jon Hartmere. Previously produced in Los Angeles in 2001 and Off-Broadway in 2004. Target Broadway opening: 2010-11.
Beauty, a new musical that uses the Grimm fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty" as a jumping-off point. Regina Spektor will compose the music, and Tina Landau will direct and write the book. Target opening: 2011-12.
Betty Boop, a musical based on the 1930s cartoon character, featuring a score by Grammy winner David Foster and a book by Sally Robinson and Oscar Williams. Target opening: 2010-11 season.
The Big Time, a new musical about two lounge singers on board a cruise ship held hostage by terrorists, with a book by Douglas Carter Beane ("Xanadu") and score by Douglas Cohen ("The Gig"). Previously produced at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. A workshop directed by Christopher Ashley ("Xanadu") was done in September 2008. Target Broadway opening: spring 2010.
Berry Gordy Project, a musical based on the life of the Motown mogul. The New York Post reports that the show is in development and will employ Motown hits for the score.
Blazing Saddles, a musical version of Mel Brooks' 1974 film spoof of westerns. Brooks recently told The Canadian Press he is working on the score.
Bonnie & Clyde, a musical based on the lives of the famous criminal couple of the 1930s. Frank Wildhorn ("The Scarlet Pimpernel," "Jekyll & Hyde") is composing the music, Don Black ("Sunset Boulevard") is the lyricist, and Ivan Menchell is writing the book. Fantasia Barrino and Whoopi Goldberg have been mentioned for the lead. The Daily News reports George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic might become involved.
Bridget Jones' Diary, a musical version of the 2001 film comedy. Helen Fielding, author of the original novel, is writing the book and lyrics. A reading of the script—without music—was held in London in May 2009.
Bring It On, a musical version of the 2000 movie about cheerleading squads at rival high schools. Lin-Manuel Miranda ("In the Heights") and Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal") will compose the music. Caligula, a rock musical based on the life of the Roman emperor, with book and score by Eric Svejcar. Previously produced at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Euan Morton participated in a developmental workshop at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. A reading with Morton was held July 13 and 14, 2009, at New World Stages in Manhattan.
A Christmas Story, a musical version of the 1983 film comedy based on Jean Shepherd's novel about a young boy in the 1940s who desperately wants a BB gun for Christmas. The book is by Joseph Robinette, and the songs are by Scott Davenport Richards. An industry reading was held Dec. 16 and 17, 2008. A production at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre ran through Jan. 3. Target opening: 2010.
Clueless, a musical version of the 1995 film comedy loosely based on Jane Austen's "Emma," set in a modern Beverly Hills high school. The score is by Stephen Trask ("Hedwig and the Angry Inch") and Peter Yanowitz of the Wallflowers. Tina Landau directs. The book is by John Dempsey ("The Witches of Eastwick"). NEW Dances With Wolves, a musical version of the 1986 novel by Michael Blake, which served as the basis for the Oscar-winning 1990 film. Producer Matt Murphy ("Memphis") has acquired the stage rights.

Enter Laughing: The Musical, a reworked revival of the 1976 musical "So Long, 174th Street," based on the play "Enter Laughing" by Joseph Stein, which was in turn based on Carl Reiner's memoir of the same name. This production was a hit Off-Broadway at the York Theatre Company during the 2008-09 season. Target opening: 2010-11.
Evita, a revival of the 1979 Andrew Lloyd Webber–Tim Rice musical. This production was a hit in London in 2006, and its star Elena Roger will reportedly headline the Broadway transfer. Michael Grandage ("Frost/Nixon," "Hamlet" with Jude Law) will direct. Rob Ashford will do the choreography. Target opening: 2011.
Fat Pig, a revival of Neil LaBute's 2004 play about a man dating an overweight woman. The New York Post reports that producers Fran and Barry Weissler are interested in bringing their London production of last year to Broadway, and Ashton Kutcher is considering taking the male lead.
A Few Good Men, a revival of Aaron Sorkin's 1989 play about a military trial. According to The New York Times, producer Ken Davenport and director David Esbjornson are seeking a star for the lead role. Target opening: 2010-11 season.
Finding Neverland, a musical based on the 2004 film about J.M. Barrie, the playwright who created Peter Pan. The book is by Allan Knee, author of the play upon which the film was based, and the score is by composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie ("Grey Gardens"). A reading was held in January 2009 with Christian Borle, Kate Baldwin, and Katie Holmes, directed by Rob Ashford. A reading of a later draft was held June 5, 2009, in Manhattan, also starring Christian Borle. Harvey Weinstein will produce. Target opening: 2010.
The First Wives Club, a musical based on the 1996 film comedy, featuring a score by pop songwriters Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Brian Holland and a book by Rupert Holmes. A pre-Broadway tryout directed by Francesca Zambello recently played San Diego's Old Globe Theatre. Zambello has since left the project and a new director is being sought. The Flintstones, a musical based on the TV cartoon series of the 1960s. TV writer Marco Pennette ("Samantha Who?") is writing the book, and Jeff Marx ("Avenue Q") and Jake Anthony are writing the music and lyrics. Gary Griffin ("The Color Purple") directs.
The Gershwins' An American in Paris, a stage version of the 1951 Oscar-winning movie musical. Ken Ludwig is writing a new book with a different story from Alan Jay Lerner's original screenplay. Gregory Boyd directs and Randy Skinner choreographs. A production at the Alley Theatre in Houston with Harry Groener and Kerry O'Malley closed June 22, 2008.
Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, a musical based on the Gerald Clarke biography of the legendary star. The Weinstein Co. has acquired the rights for both a stage and a screen version to star Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married," "The Devil Wears Prada," Encores! concert presentation of "Carnival"). No dates or creative team have been announced.
Godspell, a revival of Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak's 1971 musical based on the Gospel of St. Matthew. This production was scheduled to open in 2008 but was postponed when a major backer withdrew. Target opening: 2010-11.
Going Hollywood, a musical based on "Once in a Lifetime," the 1930 comedy by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The musical had two readings and a workshop in 1983. David Zippel wrote the lyrics, Zippel and Joe Leonardo wrote the book, and Jonathan Sheffer composed the music. Jerry Mitchell directed a reading of a revised version on May 6, 2008, in Manhattan with Christian Borle, Matthew Morrison, Leslie Kritzer, Richard Kind, Julie Halston, and David Pittu.
Golden Boy, a revival of the 1964 musical based on Clifford Odets' play of the same name. The New York Post reports that Usher is in negotiations to play the lead.
Grumpy Old Men, a musical based on the 1993 comedy about a pair of elderly neighbors engaged in a lifelong feud. A reading with Christopher Lloyd, George Hearn, Adrienne Barbeau, Carol Kane, Garrett Morris, and Conrad John Schuck was held Nov. 1 and 2, 2007, in Manhattan. The score is by Neil Berg (music) and Nick Meglin (lyrics); the book is by Dan Remmes.
Heathers, a musical based on the 1988 film comedy. Kevin Murphy ("Reefer Madness") is writing the book and lyrics, and Laurence O'Keefe ("Legally Blonde") is composing the music. A reading with Kristen Bell and Christian Campbell was held in Los Angeles the week of March 9. Plans are for a regional production in 2010, possibly followed by a Broadway run.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a revival of the 1998 Off-Broadway musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask about a transgendered rock singer. The New York Post reports that Mitchell will reprise the title role and there will be some updates to the script. Target Broadway opening: 2010-11 season.
Houdini, a musical based on the life of the escape artist, with music by Oscar and Grammy winner Danny Elfman, lyrics by David Yazbek ("The Full Monty," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"), and book by Kurt Andersen (the novels "Heyday" and "Turn of the Century"). Hugh Jackman will star. Directed by Jack O'Brien ("Hairspray"). Original target opening: spring 2010. No new dates announced.
The Hudsucker Proxy, a musical version of the 1994 film by Joel and Ethan Coen about a mailroom employee who becomes the CEO of a large corporation. Glenn Slater ("The Little Mermaid") is writing the book and lyrics. Stephen Weiner is composing the music.
The Importance of Being Earnest, a revival of Oscar Wilde's classic comedy, directed by Brian Bedford, who will also star as Lady Bracknell. Roundabout Theatre Company presents this production, which is based on Bedford's staging for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in 2009. Target opening: winter 2011 at the American Airlines Theatre.
Josephine, a musical based on the life of Josephine Baker, the African-American performer who became a star in Paris in the 1920s. The New York Times reports that Deborah Cox ("Aida") will star. Joey McKneely will direct. Steve Dorff is the composer, and John Bettis will write the lyrics. The book is by Ellen Weston and Mark Hampton.
Kinky Boots, a musical version of the 2005 film comedy about a British drag queen. Producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig have acquired the rights, and Jerry Mitchell ("Legally Blonde," "Cry-Baby") is in talks to direct. No writing team is yet in place.

A full production was mounted in Minneapolis at the Guthrie Theater in summer 2008. Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, N.J., staged a production Sept. 10–Oct. 10, 2009, which is scheduled to tour. Mandela Project, a musical based on the upcoming memoir of Zindzi Mandela, daughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela, about the South African struggle against apartheid. The creative team is TBA. Target Broadway opening: 2010.
Minsky's, a new musical about the burlesque producer, with a book by Bob Martin ("The Drowsy Chaperone"), music by Charles Strouse ("Annie"), and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead ("Jelly's Last Jam"). A production played at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles through March 1, 2009. The New York Post and the Associated Press report the producers were considering bringing it to Broadway for fall 2009. No new dates.
My Man Godfrey, a musical version of the 1936 screwball film comedy, with book by Rupert Holmes ("The Mystery of Edwin Drood") and score by Mark Hollmann ("Urinetown"). A reading was held in Manhattan on March 6, 2009.
Natural Woman, a new book musical featuring the songs of Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Director Michael Blakemore staged a private reading starring Tom Wopat and Randy Graff.
Nero, a musical by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater ("Spring Awakening") about the Roman emperor. A reading starring Euan Morton and Jan Maxwell was recently held at the Public Theater.
The Nutty Professor, a musical version of the 1963 film comedy starring Jerry Lewis as a nerdy academic who transforms into a swinging lounge lizard. Lewis will direct. Marvin Hamlisch ("A Chorus Line") is composing the music and Rupert Holmes ("The Mystery of Edwin Drood") is writing the book and lyrics. Target opening: 2010-11.

Paradise Found, a new musical based on Joseph Roth's 1939 novel "The Tale of the 1,002nd Night," set in 1870s Vienna, with book by Richard Nelson, music by Johann Strauss II (as adapted by Jonathan Tunick), and lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh. Harold Prince and Susan Stroman will co-direct. The New York Post reports that the production will likely star Mandy Patinkin, John Cullum, Judy Kaye, and Shuler Hensley. The New York Times reports that a production at London's Menier Chocolate Factory is planned for spring 2010, to be followed by a Broadway transfer.
Picnic, a revival of William Inge's 1953 play about a Labor Day picnic in a small Midwestern town. David Cromer ("Our Town," "Brighton Beach Memoirs"), who staged an acclaimed 2008 production of the play at the Writer's Theater in Chicago, directs. Target opening: fall 2010.
Rebecca, a musical version of Daphne Du Maurier's suspense novel, with book and lyrics by Michael Kunze and music by Sylvester Levay. To be directed by Francesca Zambello ("The Little Mermaid"). The show is currently playing in Vienna and Tokyo. Target Broadway opening: 2010.

Robin and the 7 Hoods, a stage version of the 1964 film musical about Chicago gangsters. Sister Act, a musical version of the 1992 film comedy, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, and book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner. Closed at the Pasadena Playhouse on Dec. 23, 2006. Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment produced the London premiere, which opened June 2, 2009, to mixed notices.
Sleepless in Seattle, a musical version of the 1993 romantic film comedy. Jeff Arch, co-author of the original screenplay, will write the book. Songwriter Leslie Bricusse has withdrawn from the project. He has been replaced by Michelle Citrin, Michael Garin, and Josh Nelson, who will collaborate on the score. Joel Zwick ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding") will direct. Target opening: Feb. 14, 2011.
A Star Is Born, a musical stage version of the 1954 film about a rising Hollywood actor and her alcoholic has-been husband. According to the New York Post, Kevin Spacey is in talks to play the male lead; Michael John LaChiusa is the musical supervisor and is adapting the screenplay. Jonathan Butterell directs. The score will feature the Harold Arlen–Ira Gershwin songs from the film. A workshop is planned for London's Old Vic Theatre.
A Streetcar Named Desire, a revival of Tennessee Williams' classic 1947 drama. According to The New York Times, producer Stephen C. Byrd plans to mount a production with a multiracial cast for spring 2011.
Summer Stock, a stage version of the 1950 movie musical about a Connecticut farm owner who allows a show to try out in her barn. The book is by Sam Scalamoni and Jeffrey Haddow, with new songs by composer Thomas Tierney and lyricists Tierney and Haddow. Four songs from the movie will be used. An invited industry showcase was held in Manhattan Aug. 6 and 7, 2009.
Tales of the City, a musical based on Armistead Maupin's series of novels about San Francisco in the 1970s. Jeff Whitty ("Avenue Q") is writing the book, and the score will be by Jason Sellard and John Garden of the band Scissor Sisters. Jason Moore ("Avenue Q") directs. A reading was presented July 4–11, 2009, at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center as part of its Musical Theater Conference.

Thriller, a musical based on the 1983 music video inspired by the song by Michael Jackson. James L. Nederlander has acquired the rights from Jackson. Tentatively, the score will use songs from Jackson's "Thriller" and "Off the Wall" albums. With Jackson's death, the production has been put on hold.
A Time to Kill, a stage adaptation by Rupert Holmes of John Grisham's novel. Scheduled to play Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., May 6–June 19, 2011, prior to a Broadway run.
To Die For, a musical based on the Joyce Maynard novel and the 1995 film inspired by a real-life murder case, to be produced by Tara Smith and B. Swibel ("Xanadu"). No creative team has been announced.
Wanda's World, a musical about "tweens" that played Off-Broadway in 2008. Target opening: fall 2010.

White Noise, a musical about real-life "Nazi folk twins" Lynx and Lamb Gaede of the band Prussian Blue. A reading was held in Manhattan on Dec. 14, 2009. The world premiere was presented in New Orleans in summer 2009.
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, a new musical based on the book by Roald Dahl and the 1971 and 2005 film versions. David Greig writes the book and Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman ("Hairspray") will write the songs. Sam Mendes is producing and may direct.
Woodstock Project, an as-yet-untitled musical about the historic 1969 rock concert, utilizing elements of Michael Lang's book "The Road to Woodstock." Target opening: 2010-11.
Zorba, a revival of the 1968 musical based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis and the 1964 film. Antonio Banderas is reportedly interested in playing the lead, and David Leveaux will direct.
