Officials at Carnegie Mellon University and the Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards have announced a new honor to be awarded onstage on Broadway’s biggest night. The Excellence in Theatre Education Award is for inspiring teachers and mentors who discover, develop, and nurture talent in their students. The award, which is the first new Tony in six years, reflects the gratitude many Broadway artists and industry professionals have expressed for educators who helped set them on their lifelong artistic journeys.
Nominations will be accepted online between now and March 31, when members of the American Theater Wing, Broadway League, Carnegie Mellon, and other theater executives will select the winner, who will receive a $10,000 cash prize for their school and be acknowledged on CBS’ Tony Awards telecast on June 7.
