Bonnie Franklin

Graces "Glorie"

Bonnie Franklin will join Estelle Parsons in the comedy "Grace and Glorie" at the Laura Pels Theatre, 45th St. and Broadway, on Tues., Nov. 5.

Best known for her long-running hit TV series "One Day at a Time" and her award-winning performance in "Applause" on Broadway, Franklin replaces Lucie Arnaz as the high-powered young New York career woman who takes on the task of saving the elderly Grace (Parsons) from land developers, bankers, and demons of failure and lost opportunity.

The play's final New York performance on Nov. 24 will be followed by a national tour starring Parsons and Franklin.

SDCF Holds

Director Symposium

Theatre educators from around the country will gather Jan. 10-12, 1997, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., for the third national Director Training Symposium.

Co-sponsored by the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation, the Drama League of New York, and Northwestern's department of theatre and performance studies, the event will include discussions on the hiring practices of producers and the components of an ideal director training program.

The weekend will also feature a performance of the Goodman Theatre's production of Horton Foote's "The Young Man From Atlanta." The play's director, Robert Falls, will speak afterwards.

Do Gooder Calls

For Scripts

A playwright unproduced professionally in New York will have a chance for a staged work through Do Gooder Productions' New Playwright Award.

The Off-Broadway company will accept scripts until Dec. 1. The play chosen will receive an Equity Off-Broadway (L.O.A.) production during the 1997-98 season. The winner will be announced in late February.

Rosenblum for Circle

Gregory Mosher, artistic director of Circle In The Square has made Edgar Rosenblum his new managing director. Rosenblum has been the executive director of Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Conn., and the president of the League of Resident Theatres, of which both the Long Wharf and Circle In The Square are members.

The appointment is the first major personnel change Mosher has made since assuming the helm of the troubled nonprofit theatre in September.

Artistic administrator Janice Muirhead will act as Long Wharf's interim executive director until a permanent replacement for Rosenblum can be found.

New Dept. Projects

The Drama Dept. theatre company has announced several projects for the 1996-97 season.

The company will begin with its second annual reading series, featuring: "Dion," a new screenplay by Frank Pugliese (Mon., Nov. 11); "Christmas on Mars" by Harry Kondoleon, starring playwright Nicky Silver and directed by David Warren (Nov. 18); "The Shaper" by John Steppling, directed by John Cameron Mitchell; and "Too True to Be Good," by George Bernard Shaw.

January will bring a full production of George S. Kaufman and Ring Lardner's "June Moon" at the Ohio Theater (66 Wooster St.), Jan. 7-19. In the spring, the company will present an original play by its artistic director, Douglas Carter Beane, to be directed by Mark Brokaw. Information: (212) 629-4656.

Robert Guralnik, 62,

Pianist-Actor

Robert Guralnik, a concert pianist and actor, died on Sun., Oct. 20, at his home in Mountainville, N.Y., from lung cancer. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Guralnik toured the U.S. and Europe with several one-man shows. His creations and collaborations included "Chopin Lives!," "Tonight: Franz Liszt," and "Brahms: A Fairy Tale."

As director of the annual summer Festival of the Arts at Lake Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y., Guralnik brought scores of professional actors, musicians, and dancers to Hudson Valley audiences. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and one brother.
