The tour de force Strindberg play “Dance of Death” is coming to Off-Broadway. Victoria Clark is directing the play for the Classic Stage Company, to be performed in repertory with “Mies Julie” by Yaël Farber, a new take on another Strindberg classic.
The production is casting three roles for Equity actors. Performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, and abilities are encouraged to audition. The two leads are Edgar and Alice. Edgar, for an actor, aged 57–63, is the Captain of the Coastal Artillery Forces and suffers from failing health. He is known for his caustic humor and stubborn nature and is both vain and bitter. Alice, for an actor, aged 40–50, is his Danish wife and is fifteen years his junior. She is a former actress with a biting wit and “unflagging sense of humor.” She is a wild girl that has grown desperate in the marriage.
The last available role is for Kurt, available to talent, aged 40–43. He is Alice’s cousin and the newly appointed Master of Quarantine and is haunted by his estrangement from his wife and children. He is also deeply in love with Alice.
Equity Principal Auditions take place on Oct. 19. Rehearsals begin around Dec. 9, and previews start Jan. 17, 2019. The show runs from Feb. 10 to March 10. Actors will be paid $725 per week under an Equity Repertory Contract.
