2015 Ovation Award Nominees Announced

The best of L.A. theater creatives are getting their due. Nominees for the Ovation Awards were announced Sept. 24 and included the Ebony Repertory Theatre and the Center Theatre Group at the top of the list with 14 recognitions each. The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts received 13 nominations for its productions including the soon-to-open Broadway production of Deaf West Theatre’s “Spring Awakening.”

There are over 50 acting nominees in eight categories including lead actor and actress in a musical; lead actor and actress in a play; and featured actor in actress in a musical and a play.

Nominated for best actress in a musical is Sandra Frank for “Spring Awakening,” which she’ll be performing on the Great White Way come Sept. 27. Also in the category are Christanna Rowader (“Ragtime”), Cori Kidder (“Always...Patsy Cline”), Vicki Lewis (“Billy Elliot the Musical”), Misty Cotton and Emily Lopez (“Carrie the Musical”), and Kim Staunton (“The Gospel at Colonus”).

La Mirada Theatre, which hosted “Billy Elliot the Musical,” “Mary Poppins,” “Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, A Musical” and “Good People,” all of which received a nod each, as well as “Carrie The Musical,” which received five, came out with 10 nods.

Other categories up for awards include best directing, choreography, best playwrighting of an original play, best lyrical composition, lighting, scenic design, and more.

This year’s Ovation Awards, the only peer-judged theater awards in L.A., ceremony will take place Monday, Nov. 9 at the Ahmanson Theatre.
