"Passion" to Air on PBS's "Playhouse"

The Tony Award-winning Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical, "Passion" will be broadcast on PBS's "American Playhouse" on September 8, from 9-11 pm. The deal was in negotiations for almost two years before a settlement was reached.

In addition to being named best musical of 1994 by the Drama Desk, "Passion" won Tony Awards for best score, best book, and best actress in Donna Murphy. Murphy, who recently won her second Tony for her current role in "The King and I," will appear in the filmed version of "Passion" as Fosca, the spinster in love with a young army captain. Jere Shea will return to his role as the captain, and his mistress will once again be played by Marin Mazzie. Both Shea and Mazzie were Tony nominees for their original performances. Lapine, also the director, recruited the entire original Broadway cast for this presentation.
