Phil Roth (1928-2002)

teran character actor Phil Roth died on July 15 of colon cancer in L.A. Born in Kansas City, Mo., he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then moved to New York City, where he began studying with Lee Strasberg. He is well remembered and written about as being the first and only person to do a scene at the Actors Studio with Marilyn Monroe. Stage appearances include national tours in How To Succeed in Business, The Great Waltz, Silk Stockings, Can Can, and co-starring with Donald O'Connor in Little Me. He was a series regular on Sha Na Na, and notable guest spots include Get Smart, Tales From the Dark Side, Charlie's Angels, Barney Miller, Cagney and Lacey, and The Monkees. His last local stage appearance was in the long-running hit Grandma Sylvia's Funeral. A memorial service was held at the Silver Spoon Restaurant in West Hollywoo
