The Porno Jim Show

The premise of the "The Porno Jim Show" is that "the solution is not less porn, but better porn!" Unfortunately, the same might be said of the show itself. The solution is not more of host Jim Graham's comedy, but better comedy. And better porn, for that matter.

Graham purports to give a humorous and educational exploration of modern pornography. Standing behind a lectern like an adjunct professor, the scrubbed and boy-scout-like Graham shows a series of pornographic movie clips, which he explains with the help of his own version of Robin Quivers, Bex! (who evidently attended the Wham! school of punctuation). Graham plays the straight man to Bex!'s babbling pseudo-kittenish Valley Girl. While Graham's explanations are at least semi-informative, Bex!'s personal confessions are unamusing and embarrassing.

Some of the clips effectively illustrate the historical development of porn flicks, such as as a French one from 1915, a Russ Meyers shot of go-go dancing topless women, or even a tacky "Flashdance"-style 1980s scene. One unintentionally funny one shows a woman who can barely stifle yawns while her inept partner keeps falling out of her like something off of "America's Funniest Home Videos." But many of clips are simply vulgar, boring, and irrelevant. Graham claims he wants to teach women how to instruct their partners, but few of the clips are terribly instructive -- unless one needs help with the missionary position. Finally, although a few of films feature women together (for men's pleasure, naturally), Graham ignores anything beyond heterosexual sex.

The idea behind "The Porno Jim Show" is promising. In the hands of a more skillful comedian or even a real historian of sexuality, the show might provide more laughs or more insight.
