Over 1,500 arts organizations applied for the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) Art Grants in 2012. Only 832 received funding, for a total of $22.3 million in monetary gifts. One of the lucky recipients is the Latino Theater Company, a theater-producing organization based out of Los Angeles that promotes Latino and other multicultural voices.
The Latino Theater Company has been recommended for a $50,000 grant, which will be used to support the commissioning of six Latino theater companies across the country to develop new work. The pieces will then be presented at the National Latino Theater Festival and Conference. The NEA grant money will also help fund the conference, which will focus on the present and future states of U.S. Latino theater practices.
“I’m proud to announce these 832 grants to the American public, including National Latino Theater Festival and Conference,” said NEA Chairman and former Broadway producer Rocco Landesman in a statement. “These projects offer extraordinary examples of creativity in our country, including the creation of new work, innovative ways of engaging audiences, and exemplary education programs.”
The National Latino Theater Festival and Conference will bring together Latino artists from around the U.S. to show their work and heighten awareness of the national Latino theater community.
