New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week.
Ready to break into TV? Start here.
In case you didn’t know, there is more television than ever before, which means there are more opportunities for TV actors than ever before, too. If you’re looking to kick start a career on a network or a streamer, you won’t want to miss the Paley Center’s How to Break Into Acting on Television. The Oct. 21 event, held at the Paley Center for Media in Midtown, will include sessions with acclaimed casting directors, agents, and managers, and inside tips for how to get your start in this specific medium. (Free, but advance RSVP is required)
Broadway stands up to gun violence.
Basically, all your favorite Broadway stars are going to sing for you on Oct. 22, and all for a very good cause. Broadway Fights Back has teamed with March for Our Lives for a benefit concert at the Town Hall, in collaboration with survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting. All proceeds will go directly to the March for Our Lives organization, which combats gun violence. The lineup of talent for the evening includes Ethan Slater, Betsey Wolfe, Barrett Wilbert Weed, Andy Mientus, Jessica Keenan Wynn, and several others. (Tickets start at $32)
Hear the Pops like you’ve never heard ‘em before.
The New York Pops is kicking off its 2018–19 season with an appropriate bang. “Roll Over Beethoven” will be presented Oct. 19 at Carnegie Hall, and feature a lineup that may be antithetical to what you’d expect to hear in that venue (hence the show’s title). The evening will feature rock ‘n’ roll favorites from the likes of Elvis, the Beatles, Chuck Berry, and others, and will again be conducted by Steven Reineke. (Tickets start at $20)
Legend recognizes legend.
Nathan Lane, Christine Baranski, and Chita Rivera are just some of the notable names who will help pay tribute to playwright Terrence McNally in honor of his 80th birthday. McNally, who is the subject of the new documentary “Every Act of Life,” and company will head to the 92Y on Oct. 21 for a screening of the doc as well as a panel discussion about McNally’s works. (Tickets start at $40)
Monday with Mandy.
Mandy Patinkin may now best be known for his Emmy-winning work on “Homeland,” but he was first a treasure of the American musical theater, and he wants to prove it to you. “Mandy Patinkin in Concert: Diaries 2018” is a blend of the multi-talent’s favorite theater standards as well as selections from his newest recordings. Held at the Connelly Theater, the only performance that has not yet sold out is on Oct. 22 (so act quickly!) (Tickets start at $154)
