Welcome to One Shot With HBO, a pop-up video series that takes a closer look at HBO’s award contenders.
Is there anything Regina King can’t do? The Oscar- and Emmy-winning star leads Damon Lindelof’s HBO limited series adaptation of “Watchmen” as Angela Abar, otherwise known as masked undercover cop Sister Night—dressed in a nun’s habit, beating white supremacists to a pulp.
King brilliantly portrays both heartbreaking drama, as her character learns about the legacy and the trauma she’s inherited, and kickass action sequences. In the pivotal scene shown in the video below, her supernatural husband Dr. Manhattan (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) informs Angela he’s in love with her as she prepares to save his life. Her no-nonsense response fits the character yet feels unexpected—the kind of duality only an actor at King’s level can pull off.
Check out the clip below to see King in action as Angela. Her Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Emmy recognition is one of 26 nominations for “Watchmen.”
