Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room.
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”
The “Harry Potter” universe is never short of magic, and it looks like more could be coming our way. Following the massive success on stage in both London and New York of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the film adaptation of the play may or may not be in development over at Warner Bros. Potter author J.K. Rowling recently tweeted, “Sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places,” along with Voldemort’s symbol. The immediate thought was there would soon be a “Cursed Child” film, but both Rowling and Pottermore have denied these rumors. However, according to We Got This Covered, which has previously scooped rumors including Ewan McGregor returning as Obi-Wan, is reporting from its sources that Warner Bros. has plans to adapt the play and intends to bring back Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Whether this is all just more fuel for the fire or not, we’ll have to wait and see, but if it turns out to happen, Fiona Weir could be tapped to cast once again.
“The Suicide Squad”
Warner Bros.’ “The Suicide Squad” has added another big name to its cast this week and has another possibly coming soon. “Doctor Who” star Peter Capaldi is reportedly joining the cast of James Gunn’s sequel feature, according to Deadline. In addition, “SNL” star Pete Davidson is reportedly in talks for a small cameo role. The deal is still coming together, Deadline reports there will be a table reading coming up on Sept. 11 with production scheduled to start just 12 days later at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, so all the pieces should be in place very shortly. Capaldi and Davidson would join a cast including Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Flula Borg, Steve Agee, Nathan Fillion, and Taika Waititi. Atlantans, keep an eye out for background opportunities now that the principal cast seems to be almost set.
“The Little Mermaid”
We’re heading back under the sea with the latest round of rumors from Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid.” Now that Harry Styles officially won’t be taking the role of Prince Eric, it’s fair game for someone else, and “13 Reasons Why” actor Christian Navarro is throwing his hat in the ring. Navarro tweeted a few weeks back, semi-jokingly auditioning to play Ariel’s prince. And earlier this week, Navarro followed up, relaying the news that Disney saw his Twitter audition and gave his team a call, wanting further audition tapes. So, it’s possible we could be just around the corner from Navarro’s casting. He would join Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle, with Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem rumored in the roles of Ursula and King Triton, respectively. Take this news as inspiration that practicing self tapes in your living room might lead to a real audition!
