Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room.
“Suicide Squad”
John Cena might be trading the ring for the Squad. First reported by Variety, the wrestler-turned-actor is currently in talks to join Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, and Jai Courtney in Warner Bros. forthcoming “Suicide Squad” sequel. Robbie and Courtney will return in their original roles as Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, respectively. It was first reported Elba would take over the role of Deadshot from Will Smith, but the studio has decided to give him a new role instead, so there’s still no word on who either Elba or Cena, if he joins, will play. The sequel is slated to hit theaters in August 2021. Lindsay Graham and Mary Vernieu were the casting directors of the first film— expect them to return.
“Love, Simon” TV Series
Simon has his own movie, and soon, he may be getting a TV series. Disney is reportedly exploring “Love, Simon” as a TV series on its new streaming platform, Disney+. The project would come from “This Is Us” showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger and follow the same path as the film: a closeted gay teen has his life changed forever when he connects online with an anonymous teen in the same situation. It’s too early to speculate on casting decisions, but Denise Chamian might continue her work from the film or “This Is Us” CD Telsey + Company may be another choice.
“Ballad of Richard Jewell”
According to Deadline, director Clint Eastwood is in talks to take over the upcoming feature “Ballad of Richard Jewell” at Disney owned Fox. The film will follow the eponymous Richard Jewell, a security guard who saves thousands of lives from an exploding bomb at the 1996 Olympics but is unjustly vilified by the press who falsely report that he was a terrorist. Ezra Edelman was formerly attached to direct “Jewell,” but plans have since changed and Eastwood is next in line, a project he has been interested in in the past. If he does officially sign on, CD Geoffrey Miclat is Eastwood’s regular, so expect him to handle the casting duties.
