Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room.
Live-Action Pokemon Netflix Series
Pokémon, Netflix chooses you! First reported by Variety at the beginning of this week, a new Pokémon live-action series is in development at the streamer. According to Variety’s sources, the project is still in the early days so no details are available about the plot—reps for Netflix have yet to comment on the project—but the series will reportedly be akin to 2019’s “Detective Pikachu.” Joe Henderson, co-showrunner and executive producer for Netflix’s “Lucifer,” is attached to write and executive produce. As it is still in early rumored days, there has been no conversation as far as a casting director yet, but if the deal with Henderson goes through, it wouldn’t hurt to keep an eye out on “Lucifer” CD Rebecca Mangieri.
“Blade”
Over at Marvel, Bassam Tariq (“Mogul Mowgli”) is currently in negotiations to direct the upcoming “Blade” movie, starring Mahershala Ali. As we previously reported, Ali will star in the adaptation of the Marvel Studios feature with “Watchman” writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour penning the script. (The hiring of Osei-Kuffour made her the first Black woman to write a Marvel Studios feature film.) Marvel has no comment at this time as they have reportedly been meeting with dozens of candidates since last fall. Plans for a new incarnation of the Blade character were revealed during Marvel’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. Plot details, a release date, and further casting have yet to be announced. Marvel veteran Sarah Finn is the casting director.
“Yes Day” Sequel
As part of a new deal with Netflix, Jennifer Garner is saying yes to a possible “Yes Day” sequel. Garner will develop a number of new movies for her to produce and star in a part of the new deal, including a now in-development sequel to the family comedy, which came out earlier this year and is reportedly the streamer’s biggest kids and family movie to date. Starring Garner and Édgar Ramírez, “Yes Day” follows two parents caught in a cycle of “no” with their three kids until they decide to say yes to almost anything. Garner will once again star, though no news has come through of whether Ramírez will, as well. Should the project make it out of development and into Netflix’s streaming slate—expect it to do just that—McCarthy/Abellera Casting could also return.
