"I was licking jelly off my boyfriend's penis, and I thought, 'Oh my God, I'm turning into my mother.'"
After three songs by the raucous Silver Men--including the Buzzcocks classic "Orgasm Addict"--the lithe, raven-haired Sarah Silverman saunters onstage as if she wandered through it on her way to the bathroom. She most definitely did not.
With an understated command of the stage, Silverman uses every gesture and nuance of her voice to make the audience belly-laugh and cringe--often at the same moment. Her harshly honest humor--tackling subjects like molestation, terrorism and racial stereotypes--is delivered in a coy, almost shy voice, increasing its impact.
A former SNL writer, film and TV actor (most recently, "Greg the Bunny"), and comedy club veteran, Silverman's comic voice has been honed to a razor edge--to the point that when you hear a joke of hers second-hand, it bears her distinctive mark, much like those of more well-known comics, like Jerry Seinfeld.
"Jesus Is Magic"--which refers to a single throwaway line in the beginning instead of any grand theme in the piece--is, according to Silverman, still a bit of a work-in-progress that she hopes to make "richer." We look forward to what she does with an already hilarious hour of comedy.
