Calling all artists! If you’re looking for a new creative project, enter Backstage’s Sound Stories competition. With in-person film production limited, Sound Stories challenges you to write, cast, record, edit, and submit a story fully told through sound, and you can do it all right from your own home.

The more creative you get with your use of sound, the better! Telling narrative stories through sound doesn’t mean your story needs to only be conversational dialogue or voiceover. Find new ways to make your listeners feel immersed in the world you are creating in your Sound Story.

Your Sound Story can be up to five minutes long and must involve a voice actor or performer you cast on Backstage. Every competitor can post a listing for free on the Backstage casting boards, regardless of whether you’re currently a Backstage member. Interested performers can register on our website for updates and tips for participation in Sound Stories projects!

The Sound Story must fit one of three themes, which will be revealed on Sept. 26. Register in advance to get notified when the themes are announced—the earlier you start, the longer you have to cast and produce your Sound Story!

Submissions open Sept. 26 and are due by Oct. 25. They will be judged by Backstage and industry experts. The winning project and the two runners-up will be featured on Backstage.com, and the winners will receive a prize package valued at around $5,000, with audio equipment, free casting, and talent subscriptions to Backstage, and more, to be distributed amongst the project’s cast and crew!
