Theatres in the Southland? Why, yessiree. There are more than a few. And here's our annual trade guide for actors, artists, and producers who work on the wicked stage in SoCal or would like to do so. Compiled by John Carey with the invaluable help of the staff of Theatre LA, the following represents our best efforts to give all the latest information about spaces for rent, ensemble companies who cast and produce, independent producing organizations, and all manner of practical resources for stage productions. If we've gotten anything wrong, please let us know so we can fix it in next year's guide. Until then, see you at the theatre!

INDEPENDENT THEATRE COMPANIES
These companies either tour, rent space as needed, or are in temporary residence at a specific theatre named in parenthesis. As such they are typically not the folks to call about rentals.
Submitting manuscripts to theatrical companies: Before sending a manuscript to a theatrical company, writers should send a query composed of a synopsis, cast breakdown, a few pages of sample dialogue, the playwright's resume, and information about if or when and where the play has been performed. Include a SASE.

VALET
If you are renting from a theatre without a parking lot or its own valet service, you may opt to hire a valet service on your own. Most companies provide valets at a rate between $13-18 per hour per attendant-- that's for free valet parking for your guests. If you decide to let your patrons pay for valet service, then those fees are deducted from your pre-arranged price. Negotiate that in advance, as some companies do not charge parking guests.
The amount of attendants will depend on the number of patrons you expect; typically one attendant for each 15 cars. In either case, make sure the company is insured. Also, when you call, have as much information as possible regarding not only your needs, but an idea of the area around the theatre: If you can make the attendants' job easier by finding a nearby lot for them to park in, they will often give you a discount on the hourly rate. Some companies need as many as three weeks or more advance notice; many need only a few days. It is always a good idea to check with the theatre owner to see if she can recommend a valet service company.
