Stay Sharp with Improv

Whether you’re a seasoned pro, or just starting out in this business, I can’t stress enough how important it is to continue taking classes. And when it comes to staying sharp for commercial auditions, improv training is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your career. Improv classes prepare you for anything that might be thrown at you in an audition, callback, or on set. Improvisation teaches you to be a malleable performer, to listen, and to be in the moment. In any given audition you might be asked to read a script with several different directions. The more specific you are with each different read, the better. Since you have such a small amount of time in each audition, it’s crucial to use it wisely. On average, you will do two takes in an audition. So even if the session director doesn’t give you a different direction for the second take, you should make a different choice for your second read. Even a very subtle change demonstrates that you have range. Improv classes keep you sharp and spontaneous so that you can quickly make different, unique choices and take any direction given to you.
