'Stuff,' 'Inishmore,' 'Chow' Win Obies

The Obies continued its tradition of rewarding theatre with a political bite on Monday when it honored Stuff Happens with three awards and gave playwright Martin McDonagh an award for The Lieutenant of Inishmore, a gruesome satire on the nature of violence.

In addition to Inishmore, Rolin Jones' The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow, about an agoraphobic Chinese-American woman who searches for her biological parents, also won an award for playwriting.

Christine Ebersole received an Obie for her performance in the musical Grey Gardens, a turn that has already earned her honors from the Drama League, the New York Drama Critics, and the Outer Critics Circle. S. Epatha Merkerson (Birdie Blue), Dana Ivey (Mrs. Warren's Profession), and Sherie Rene Scott (Landscape of the Body) also won Obies, which honor work for Off-Broadway and are administered by The Village Voice.

Stuff Happens, a play by David Hare about how the U.S. and Britain entered the Iraq war, received awards for acting (Peter Francis James, Byron Jennings) and directing (Daniel Sullivan).

John Clancy, a co-founder of the New York International Fringe Festival, was given an award for sustained excellence in directing. Reed Birney, who has replaced Jennings as Tony Blair in Stuff, was given an Obie for sustained excellence in performing.
