Summer can be a slow season for actors in Los Angeles. TV series take a break, some productions slow down, and about half of Hollywood flees town in August. Before you throw in the towel—or, better yet, spread it out on a beach—consider taking the opportunity to brush up your skills during the summer lull.
Asian-American theatre company East West Players is one of several L.A. institutions that offers a summer acting program. Its Actors Conservatory Summer Intensive is a six-week program designed to give actors an overview of theatre arts through physical, mental, and vocal challenges. The program also sets up informal Q&As with guest speakers. Last year's speakers included actor Alec Mapa (UPN's Half & Half, Connie and Carla), director Henry Chan (Moesha, The King of Queens), NBC Entertainment Talent Diversity Initiative producer Damona Resnick, and actor Emily Kuroda (The WB's Gilmore Girls).
