New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week.
Support Autism Speaks with the arts.
Arts for Autism 2017 will bring superstar Broadway vets including Kelli O’Hara, Stephanie J. Block, and "Hamilton" star Christopher Jackson to the Gershwin Theater (where “Wicked” currently runs) for an evening of powerful song on June 19. With all proceeds going to Autism Speaks, the evening will see talent “perform to inspire compassion, kindness, and understanding.” (Tickets start at $35)
Get in touch with your emo past.
If you’re nostalgic for the days of early aughts angst, look no further than the Bell House’s Emo Night on June 17, which will feature the melodramatic tunes from Taking Back Sunday, Something Corporate, and all the other bands who helped you cope through “The O.C.” You must be 21+ to attend the event at the Gowanus venue. Monday in the Park with Kong.
The HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival kicks off again on June 19, and its first offering of the season is supersized for the occasion. On the park’s lush green lawn, the 1933 classic “King Kong” will be screened at sunset. The lawn, however, will be open at 5 p.m. and it is highly encouraged attendees arrive as early as possible to claim a prime spot. (Free)
Experience the last decade of musical theater in one evening.
The acclaimed Broadway by the Year series returns to The Town Hall for its final installment of the season with songs comprising the last decade of musical theater. Featuring selections from “Hamilton,” “Waitress,” “The Bridges of Madison County,” “Next to Normal,” and several others, the evening will feature top tier talent including Tony nominees Brandon Uranowitz, Alex Brightman, and more. Swim with the fishies.
Coney Island’s annual Mermaid Parade swims back to the boardwalk on June 19, bringing with it a school of hundreds of shimmering mermaids and men. And even more enticing, this year’s Parade Royalty is as magical as the mermaids themselves: Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie. Slip into your fishtail and get to the boardwalk! (Free)
Do your donut due diligence.
Not that you needed an excuse to spend the day eating donuts, but you’ve nevertheless got one when Donut Fest (it’s exactly what it sounds like) brings offerings of all the finest fried dough delicacies to the Meatpacking District’s Marquee on June 17. Every ticket entitles you to a tasting from each vendor, which will include New York staples Gossip Coffee, Forbidden Donuts, and more, as well as Kahlua and coffee cocktails. (Tickets start at $29)
