Welcome to the ’60s.

NBC is holding an open casting call to find their next Tracy Turnblad for the upcoming live production of the Tony Award–winning musical, “Hairspray.”

The production is seeking a female, 18 or older, to play the high school–aged Tracy. Talent must come prepared to sing a short portion of the show’s opener, “Good Morning Baltimore,” a capella.

Casting is looking for someone “heavyset” and “outgoing, unstoppable, good-hearted with a vibrant, lovable, spirited personality.” The actor to portray Tracy should be a “strong pop belt singer and great mover.”

“Hairspray” takes place in 1960s Baltimore and centers on teenager Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of dancing on local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” The musical tackles race relations and integration during a particularly contentious period in American history.

The original Broadway musical won eight Tony Awards in 2003, including best musical and prizes for leads Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur. “Hairspray” is based off John Waters’ 1988 film. Film director Adam Shankman later adapted the musical into a feature in 2007.

NBC’s “Hairspray Live!” follows the network’s other staged live productions of “The Sound of Music,” “Peter Pan,” and “The Wiz.”

Auditions for Tracy Turnblad will occur Sunday, April 24 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Telsey + Co. located at 315 W. 43rd St. (10th Floor) in New York City. Sign-in begins at 9 a.m.

Talent should arrive to the audition with a picture and résumé with full contact information. Email HairsprayOpenCall@gmail.com with questions.
