The Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee announced today a total of 123 nominations in 27 categories for the 34th Annual Joseph Jefferson Awards gala to be held on Monday, November 4 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie.

The nominations for outstanding production of a play went to "As You Like It" from Chicago Shakespeare Theater; Steppenwolf Theatre Company's productions of "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "The Royal Family"; and "Misalliance" and "The Price" from Writers' Theatre. Musical productions nominated include "1776" and "Miss Saigon" from Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire; Court Theatre's production of "My Fair Lady"; Chicago Shakespeare Theater's "Pacific Overtures"; and "The Visit" from The Goodman Theatre.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire led this year's roster of nominee Equity theatres with a total of sixteen Jeff nominations each for their 2001-2002 season productions. Court Theatre followed with eleven nominations, Writers' Theatre with ten, Steppenwolf with nine and Drury Lane Oakbrook and Goodman with eight each.

The awards presentation will be held on Monday, November 4 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie at 9501 Skokie Boulevard. Marc Robin, a veteran Chicago director and choreographer, will direct this year's ceremony. Light supper with a cash bar will begin at 6:00 PM, and the awards ceremony will begin at 7:30 PM. Celebrants will be invited to enjoy a dessert buffet after the awards. The evening is black tie optional, and the public is invited to attend.

During the 2001-2002 season (August 1, 2001 - July 31, 2002), the 45-member Jeff Committee judged a total of 112 Equity productions offered by 49 local producing organizations and five non-resident productions. The committee recommended a total of 76 productions presented by 28 producing organizations. The final roster of 116 Jeff nominations in 24 categories represents productions from 28 producing organizations. The seven Non-Resident nominations in three categories represent five productions from five producing organizations.

Founded in 1968, the mission of the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee is to honor excellence in theatrical productions in the Chicago theatre community. Originally chartered to recognize Equity productions, the Citations non-Equity wing was founded in 1973 to celebrate outstanding achievement in non-union Chicago theatre. Non-Resident award categories were established in 1992 in recognition of the contributions to Chicago theatre by non-local producing organizations. The committee, composed of theatre professionals and enthusiasts, evaluates approximately 250 theatrical productions and holds two awards ceremonies each year. The Citations Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in non-union productions, are presented in early June. The Jeff Awards for excellence in Equity and Non-Resident theatre are celebrated in late October or early November.

Advance ticket prices for the awards ceremony are $55 for general admission and $40 for members of Actors' Equity Association, United Scenic Artists and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, if purchased in advance. If purchased at the door, tickets are $65 and $50, respectively. Ticket orders may be mailed to Richard Hesler, 3035 Farner Court, Riverwoods, IL 60015. For further information call 847-945-4733.
