Untitled Kal Penn Project
NBC is giving the hot-button topic of immigration some humor and heart. The Peacock Network has greenlit a currently untitled comedy pilot from Kal Penn, Matt Murray, and Michael Schur. After his time as a New York City councilman comes to an abrupt end, a man is suddenly tasked with providing the American Dream to six immigrants who have just arrived in the United States. The man finds his purpose once again as he sets out to help the individuals navigate a new home filled with challenges. In addition to working on the show behind the scenes, Penn will also star in the potential series. No other actors have been cast, but Schur go-to Allison Jones is on board to find talent. Production is set to begin in March in New York.

“Stumptown”
With ABC’s pilot order for “Stumptown,” Oni Press is about to see one of its comic book series adapted for the screen. The story will follow an Army veteran who forgoes the public sector to work as a private investigator. The former soldier learns to push her personal life to the background in order to better serve her clients. ABC is the home of everything Marvel, including “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and a hefty roster of films from its parent company, Disney. However, this project marks the Alphabet Network’s first real departure from its vast collection of in-house material in favor of a smaller publisher. Deanna Brigidi is casting the drama, whose roster is currently empty. That will change soon; the detective series looks to start shooting in March in Los Angeles.

“Courthouse”
Audiences can’t seem to get enough crime stories, and further evidence comes in the form of CBS’ new procedural drama “Courthouse.” The one-hour pilot will take an in-depth look at the American justice system as it examines each of the parts involved in making the system run. From bailiffs and plaintiffs to criminals and crimes, the pilot will examine every occupation within a Los Angeles courthouse and how it operates in conjunction with the others. While it’s early in the process and there are no actors on the cast list just yet, Rebecca Mangieri is preparing to assemble the roster. Production on the legal drama will start in March, likely in L.A.
