New York City–area actor Tiffany Peach has a morning routine: drinking coffee and perusing Backstage. That’s how she booked the Off-Broadway play “Park for Your Problems.”
The play is like NYC itself.
“[It’s about] strangers in a park realizing that, after all, they are not that different from one another and actually share many experiences and secrets, [which] was very intriguing to me. It is a feeling I have encountered frequently since moving to New York.”
Don’t box yourself in.
“I would advise everyone to apply for parts they think they might not be the right fit for, if it’s a project you want to be a part of. I’ve often been called in for parts I was sure I wasn’t the right type for, and, surprisingly, those were also the jobs I often ended up booking.”
Backstage is a daily necessity.
“[I use Backstage] pretty much on a daily basis. Backstage now is actually a crucial part of my morning routine, and often the first thing I do (after coffee, of course).”
Know your type, but don’t let it limit you.
“I always get super excited whenever I see a lead part in a play listed, since theater is truly where my heart is, but I apply for all sorts of roles. I realized I often get called in for the ‘girl next door’ type or ‘girlfriend of,’ which is super fun. But I also can’t wait to move into a stage where I can play more character-based roles. Lady M is waiting for me somewhere down the line, hopefully!”
Support is as important as ambition.
“I have been living in NYC for about three years, and while it is a very competitive market, I am loving every minute of it. Especially when you’re just coming out of school, this city and industry can be absolutely overwhelming. I am incredibly fortunate to have an amazing group of friends from all over the world I graduated from school with. While, yes, it is important to be a go-getter and fight on your own, your friends and colleagues are where it’s at—not just for your own sanity in this crazy jungle of a city, but also to support each other, create work together, and fuel each other’s creativity.”
