At this play's start, Philip (Thomas Fiscella), a clinical psychologist and expert in hypnotherapy, stands alone on a darkened stage, save one light shining on him. He reveals that he has lived in so many places in his life, following a rootless father, that he has no sense of home. His world appears to be bounded by the four walls of his office, and his life is his work.
When Azmera (Erica Tazel), an African graduate student, comes to him with complaints of debilitating anxiety and problems studying, he agrees to "trance" her so he can help her get to the bottom of her problems. Once this is accomplished, she reveals that she has seen an episode of genocide, in her travels to an African country, that she has repressed as too traumatic to be borne. Faced with the dilemma of knowing something that should be revealed but ethically needing to respect his patient's confidence, he turns to a reporter, Beth (Ashley West Leonard), who may be able to tackle the story without revealing her source. Their deeply disturbing moral dilemma drives the action.
Helming this cerebral, world premiere work by playwright-psychologist Bob Clyman, director Jessica Kubzansky never compromises the emotional depth of the characters' struggles while adroitly allowing lighter moments to weave throughout the narrative effectively.
Subtle sound effects by David Edwards, strategic lighting by Jeremy Pivnick, and a large, spare stage by Narelle Sissons work harmoniously to heighten the atmosphere of suspense in the unfolding events. The acting trio is joined by Logan (Andrew Borba), a State Department undersecretary whose involvement in the quest for the truth places his job in jeopardy. The four performers are thoroughly focused, skilled, and believable.
Layered with provocative ethical questions, the play leaves us thinking even after it ends. Its topicality engenders reflection, as good theatre should.
