In this exclusive video, Andrew Rannells (“Girls,” “The Book of Mormon”) counts down his seven favorite TV episodes, films, and documentaries streaming on HBO’s new Internet service, HBO Now, which allows users access to tons of content even if they don’t have cable access.
See which HBO projects made Rannells’ list below!
“Oz,” Season 5, Episode 6: “Variety”
As a theater actor himself, Rannells recounts a very special musical episode of the prison drama “Oz,” in which the inmates put on a variety show. “It’s a really trippy, trippy, trippy episode, but it’s certainly one that made a big impression on me,” he says.
“Enlightened,” Season 1, Episode 1
The Laura Dern-starring drama also makes Rannells’ list of favorite things streaming on HBO Now. Particularly, it’s the pilot he finds so gripping. “She’s just so raw and fearless, and it’s just so compelling to watch,” Rannells says of the “Enlightened” star player.
“Big Love,” Season 5, Episode 10: “Where Men and Mountains Meet”
If you loved this HBO drama and think it deserved more attention than it got, you’re not alone. “I feel like it didn’t get its proper due, ’cause it’s really some of the best acting on television, I think,” Rannells says.
“The Paradise Lost Trilogy”
Of the many documentaries available for streaming, the actor notes “Paradise Lost” is a fascinating true story about three men who are accused of murdering a child and are sentenced quickly and haphazardly. “It’s such a terrifying look at how the legal system can really not work in your favor in this country,” he explains.
“Getting On,” Season 2, Episode 4: “The 7th Annual Christmas Card Competition”
“That cast, that ensemble is bananas good,” Rannells says of the “Getting On” cast. “Their performances are so incredibly moving, but so hilarious.” Catch the entire hospital crew—Alex Borstein, Laurie Metcalf, Niecy Nash, and more—on HBO Now.
Sarah Silverman, “We Are Miracles”
Other than series and documentaries, Rannells’ favorites include standup as well, including Silverman’s hilarious special “We Are Miracles.” “I’m in awe of the timing and skill that she’s perfected,’ he says.
“Angels in America”
Lastly, who could forget the beautiful adaptation of “Angels in America” starring Al Pacino and Meryl Streep? “It’s so incredibly moving,” Rannells says—a must-see for actors.
