Vampires have dominated screens big and small for years, perhaps none more so than that terrifying Transylvanian that launched the genre in the first place. Dracula is a feast of a role for film performers, a test of charisma and menace verging on camp. (It’s harder than it looks to say “I vant to suck your blood” with a straight face.)
For a tutorial on how to ride that line between authenticity and absurdity, look no further than Gerard Butler’s audition for the title role in Wes Craven’s “Dracula 2000,” a modern riff on Bram Stoker’s novel. There’s nothing self-conscious or ironic about his performance in the video below; his belief in the character’s innate power is airtight. His poor scene partner can only cower in fear—and desire?—as Butler practically grows fangs on the spot, pronouncing each line with relish, in total command of the material.
And let’s face it... He gets extra points for that sexy eyeliner. Happy Almost Halloween!
