The World Cup begins this week but if ‘the beautiful game’ is not for you, we have some very alluring alternatives to Ronaldo’s superlative ball control. The visual arts, the spoken word, and the wonder of theatre are all represented in this week’s non-footballing London round-up.

Live your West End dreams in public.
Put on your singing trousers and join your musical colleagues at West End Live, the annual free concert/sing-along in Trafalgar Square on June 16 + 17. Performers from shows like ‘Everyone’s Talking About Jamie’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Tina!’, and ‘Chicago’ will be belting out songs during this two-day extravaganza. Whether you’re in the west end or aspire to work there, this should be inspiring and fun. (Free)

Get artsy at the Royal Academy.
Grayson Perry, the Turner Prize-winning national treasure and artist, is in charge of this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. It’s the world’s largest open submission show, meaning famous artists are exhibited next to complete amateurs and as it’s the RA’s 250th year, expect the unexpected. If you’re at all creative you’ll love every second. (Tickets: £16)

Go Wilde for Rupert Everett.
‘The Happy Prince’ is a passion project from actor-turned-director Rupert Everett, who battled for years to get this portrait of Oscar Wilde’s last years on to the big screen. On June 16 at the Curzon Mayfair, Everett will be talking about being the director, star, producer, and writer of this Oscar-tipped biopic. (Tickets: £17)

Celebrate the spoken word.
Up in north London, the Last Word Festival 2018 kicks off this week. Celebrating ‘fearless storytelling’, a range of events such as a mammoth poetry slam, a live recording of the Guilty Feminist podcast, and cult comedy hit ‘Pundemonium’ are taking over the Roundhouse. It’s billed as an event for people who think differently so if that’s you, get to it! (Tickets from £10)
