AFI Names 10 Best Films and TV Programs of 2012

AFI Names 10 Best Films and TV Programs of 2012

The American Film Institute has announced its selections for the 2012 AFI Awards, honoring excellence in both film and television.

Leading Best Picture Oscar contenders “Argo,” “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” “Lincoln,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and “Zero Dark Thirty” all made the list, as did potential nominees “Django Unchained,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” and “Moonrise Kingdom.”

Perhaps the only surprise in AFI’s top 10 is the inclusion of “The Dark Knight Rises.” The final chapter in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy was a hit at the box office and among critics, but hasn’t gained traction in this year’s awards races the way its predecessor, “The Dark Knight,” did four years ago. And although “The Master,” “The Sessions,” and “Flight” have all earned awards buzz this season, they were left out of AFI’s best-of list.

AFI’s honorees in television closely match this year’s Emmy winners and nominees, with dramas much more heavily represented than comedies. The list includes “American Horror Story,” “Breaking Bad,” “Game Change,” “Game of Thrones,” “Girls,” “Homeland,” “Louie,” “Modern Family,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Mad Men,” which has made this list five times and is now the most-recognized AFI Awards TV honoree.

The winning creative ensembles will be honored at an invitation-only luncheon Friday, Jan. 11, in L.A. See AFI’s full lists below.
