On Broadway and beyond, a curtain can rise as quickly as it can fall; a star can be swapped as easily as Bernie Telsey can say, “That’s enough.” Theater is the beating heart of New York show business and, if you want to make it here, it’s crucial you’re up to date on incoming projects, latest castings, and other industry news. Don’t worry, Broadway baby, Backstage has your back. Every week, we’re rounding up the can’t-miss stories no thespian should live without, so you can focus on important matters like hitting your high F. Curtain up and light those lights!

Armie Hammer will hit New York’s biggest stage.
Currently generating Academy buzz for his role in “Call Me By Your Name,” Armie Hammer is striking while the iron is hot and will next head to the Great White Way. Hammer will star in Young Jean Lee’s dark comedy “Straight White Men,” appearing alongside Tom Skerritt. Beginning previews at the Helen Hayes Theater June 29, 2018, the Second Stage production will be directed by Anna D. Shapiro.

A Housewife heads to “Chicago.”
Kandi Burruss, best known as a cast member of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” will make her Broadway debut in its teflon hit, “Chicago.” Burruss will play Matron Mama Morton in the Kander and Ebb tuner for a strictly limited eight-week engagement, beginning Jan 15, 2018.

Jayne Houdyshell can’t stay away from the stage.
Tony Award winner and New York theater stalwart Jayne Houdyshell, seen last season on Broadway in “A Doll’s House Part 2,” will lead MCC Theater’s world premiere production of “Relevance,” a prescient drama by JC Lee. Tony-nominated director Liesl Tommy (“Eclipsed”) will helm, with previews slated to begin at Off-Broadway’s Lucille Lortel Theatre Feb. 1, 2018.

A new “Frankenstein” rounds out its cast.
Off-Broadway’s incoming production of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” has announced its full ensemble. Led by Tony nominee Robert Fairchild, the Ensemble for the Romantic Century production will also star Avey Noble, Krysty Swann, Mia Vallet, Peyton Lusk, and Paul Wesley. In addition to starring, Fairchild will also choreograph the inventive take on the horror classic, with Donald T. Sanders on board to direct. Previews begin Dec. 21 at the Pershing Square Signature Center.

Off-Broadway “[PORTO]” premiere sets its dates and cast.
Obie Award winner Kate Benson’s Off-Broadway premiere production of “[PORTO]” has announced dates as well as its cast. Beginning previews at WP Theater Jan 28, 2018, the cast will include Noel Joseph Allain, Ugo Chukwu, Jorge Cordova, Leah Karpel, Julia Sirna-Frest, as well as Benson herself. Lee Sunday Evans will direct, as she did for Benson’s previous piece, the Obie-winning “A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes.”
