In 1998 U.S. senator Gary Hart was the man to beat in the presidential election. That is, until a scandal derailed both his campaign and the way the American press covers politicians.

“The Front Runner,” director Jason Reitman’s upcoming dark comedy about that tumultuous campaign, includes such starry talent as J.K. Simmons, Vera Farmiga, Alfred Molina, and Hugh Jackman as Hart. Adapted from Matt Bai’s book “All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid,” and written for the screen by Reitman, Bai, and Jay Carson, the film will be released just in time for Oscars season by Columbia Pictures Nov. 7, after a premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
