PERFORMANCES
Looking to get out of the city for a night? Comedian and actress Whitney Cummings will be performing at Oxnard Levity Live on June 1 and 2. (Tickets: $30)
Are you a fan of the popular Harmontown podcast? Then check out live recordings of the show on June 4, 11, and 18 at the Dynasty Type Writer. The show starts at 8 p.m. (Tickets: $12.50)
Comedian and actor Kevin Hart will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl on June 7 at 8 p.m. as part of his Irresponsible Tour. (Tickets start at $35)
Looking to see something a little different? Comedy and professional wrestling collide in Flying Chuck at Second City Hollywood on June 21 at 10 p.m. (Tickets: $10)
“Don’t Stop!” is a scripted comedic, musical play that celebrates Fleetwood Mac. The group has been together since 2013 and is excited to launch this new show at Largo at the Coronet on June 14. (Tickets: $30)
Soul Sista Presents: Drop the Beat is an L.A.-based character/sketch/improv team. In this show at the Pack Theater, rappers will freestyle off audience suggestions and improvisers will improv off the freestyles. Pay what you can at the door.
EVENTS
The Ruby LA is hosting its first Queer Comedy Festival to amplify the voices of its LGBTQ+ community members. This six-hour festival will feature all different kinds of comedy and fun. The show is $10 for the day or $5 every hour at the door.
AUDITIONS
West Coast Performing Arts Presenters is casting the one-man play “Forever Brooklyn!”, a coming-of-age story that’s told from the standpoint of an aspiring Jewish-American comic (25-35 y/o). He’s desperately trying to get out of Brooklyn to pursue a career in comedy, but his family won’t let him. The role involves singing, so a strong voice is a must. Check out more details on Backstage.
April’s Fools Comedy Improv Troupe is holding an open casting call on June 2 to find a new non-dues paying associate cast member. The group performs monthly at the Hermosa Beach Pier Ave 2nd Story Theater as well as other events in the South Bay area.
“Nerve,” a TV pilot intended to be pitched to networks and agents this summer, is looking for its three leads for a promo of the show. The show is about three gay men of color living in L.A. and follows their adventures of figuring out their lives as individuals and with one another. The promo will shoot in DTLA on June 22.
ELATE Theatre Group is holding an open casting call on June 2 and June 4 to cast “The Psychic,” a comedy-mystery that will run in L.A. from Aug. 11-26.
CLASSES
If you’re looking to write a short film, check out this six-week course at The Ruby LA. You’ll learn how to format a script, write dialogue, and structure a story. By the end of the class, you’ll have a completed draft of a short comedy film. The class will meet every Sunday beginning June 3 and costs $250.
Want to get into sketch writing? The Improv Space in Westwood is offering Intro to Sketch Writing starting June 23. In this class, you’ll learn how to come up with sketch ideas, pitch them, and then see them through the writing and rewriting stages. This is a great class for beginners or someone looking to refresh their skills. The class culminates with a table read.
If you’re interested in taking a beginner improv class, UCB still has a couple of Improv 101 classes still open. You’ll learn the fundamentals of long-form improv and the class ends with a performance at the UCB theatre. Classes cost $450.
