chard, Tony Goldwyn's character in Theresa Rebeck's new play, The Water's Edge, is both bastard and victim, Goldwyn says, and that's just fine with him. He likes playing someone who's morally ambiguous, "against whom the deck is stacked," he says. "I can then be his advocate. Richard has ostensibly abandoned his family and is allegedly responsible for the death of his child." With a nubile girlfriend in tow, Richard surfaces at the home of his ex-wife (played by Kate Burton) 17 years after disappearing—or being exiled, depending on your point of view. He has returned to reclaim the family house and reconnect with his children (played by Mamie Gummer and Austin Lysy), who are essentially stranger
