Small Theatres Receive J.P. Morgan Grants

The J.P. Morgan The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York has awarded more than $150,000 in small theatre grants to 38 companies this year, including The Civilians, the Ma-Yi Theatre, New Georges and Theatre by the Blind. The program gives grants ranging from $2,000 to $7,500 to companies with annual budgets between $100,000 and $500,000. Since its founding in 1998, it has donated more than $800,000.

The program was created after J.P. Morgan approached A.R.T./New York about developing a system that would support companies at a critical stage in their development: when they are too large to receive funding as "emerging theatres," and too small to receive support from many foundations and corporations.

The program helps get the companies through this sometimes difficult stage of development, which often happens just as troupes are just hitting their artistic stride.

The Civilians is an Obie-winning troupe that specializes in documentary theatre; the Ma-Yi is a company devoted to Asian artists; New Georges recently had its production of Dead City extended; and Theatre by the Blind, which features work by both blind and sighted actors, recently signed a Letter of Agreement contract with Actors' Equity Association as it begins producing more than one play a season.
