The Jesus Hickey by Luke Yankee has won the first annual Joel and Phyllis Ehrlich Award for a promising new play that focuses on timely subject matter.
A lyrical comedy that takes a hard-nosed look at issues of fame and faith in a small Irish town, Hickey was selected from more than 50 entries. It was presented in a developmental reading at The Players Theater on June 11. It was part of the TRU Voices Ninth Annual TRU Play Reading series, sponsored by Bob Ost and Theater Resources Unlimited.
The actors appearing in the reading included Merle Louise, Matthew Arkin, Liz Morton, Sean Dugan, Malachy McCourt, and Todd Conner. The director was Casey Childs, founder and executive director of Primary Stages. The play recounts the comic religious frenzy that transpires when a young woman is seen with a hickey on her neck evoking the face of Jesus.
