On Broadway and beyond, a curtain can rise as quickly as it can fall; a star can be swapped as easily as Bernie Telsey can say, “That’s enough.” Theater is the beating heart of New York show business and, if you want to make it here, it’s crucial you’re up to date on incoming projects, latest castings, and other industry news. Don’t worry, Broadway baby, Backstage has your back. Every week, we’re rounding up the can’t-miss stories no thespian should live without, so you can focus on important matters like hitting your high F. Curtain up and light those lights!

An inmate returns to the New York theater.
“Orange Is the New Black” Emmy Award winner Uzo Aduba has lined up her return to the New York stage, leading Roundabout Theatre Company’s “Toni Stone” Off-Broadway. Written by Lydia R. Diamond, the world premiere production will be directed by Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon and begin performances at the Laura Pels Theatre in May 2019. More casting details are to-be-announced.

“Straight White Men” adds some men and women.
Next season’s Broadway production of “Straight White Men” has made additions to its cast. Joining previously-announced Armie Hammer and Tom Skerritt in the Second Stage run will be “Younger” star Josh Charles, Kate Bornstein, and Ty DeFoe, all of whom will be making their Broadway debuts. The dark comedy, by Young Jean Lee, will also mark the first-ever Broadway production by an Asian-American female playwright. Previews begin June 29 at the Hayes Theater, with direction by Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro.

Cera + Lonergan team again for Broadway.
Producer Scott Rudin has announced a Broadway run of Kenneth Lonergan’s “The Waverly Gallery,” beginning performances at the John Golden Theatre Sept. 1. The cast will feature stage legend Elaine May, Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges in his Broadway debut, and Michael Cera in his third Lonergan production (Cera currently stars in Lonergan’s “Lobby Hero” on Broadway). Lila Neugebauer (“The Wolves”) will helm, making her Broadway directorial debut.

A legend will re-grace the Broadway stage.
Tony and Olivier Award winner Janet McTeer will glide back to Broadway in the world premiere production of “Bernhardt/Hamlet,” a new play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Theresa Rebeck. The play, which will kick off Roundabout Theatre Company’s 2018–19 season, will be directed by Tony nominee Moritz von Stuelpnagel and will begin previews at the American AIrlines Theatre April 1.

“Empire Records” is heading to Broadway.
Producer Bill Weiner has announced plans to bring “Empire Records” to Broadway in musical form, having acquired the rights to the 1990s cult comedy. The writer of the film, Carol Heikkinen, will adapt the screenplay for the stage incarnation, with a brand new score courtesy of Zoe Sarnak (the 2018 Jonathan Larson Grant winner). The tuner is currently aiming for a 2020 premiere, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the film’s release.

A great cast is in place for “Great Leap.”
Atlantic Theater Company has announced casting for its New York premiere of “The Great Leap,” a new play by Lauren Yee. Tony winner B.D. Wong will lead the cast, along with Ali Ahn, Ned Eisenberg, and Tony Aidan. Directed by Taibi Magar, the drama begins performances at Atlantic Stage 2 on May 23, with a limited engagement slated through June 17.
