Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) is offering two series of legal seminars for artists working in all creative fields.

The first, "Copyright Basics," will address various aspects of copyright law and how artists can protect their creative rights. Topics to be covered include: copyright registration, recognizing and combating infringement, licensing, new legal developments, and work-for-hire.

Admission is $20. The seminar will be held Nov. 12, Dec. 10, Jan. 14, and Feb. 11, 1-3 pm.

At the "Not-for-profit Incorpo-ration and Tax Exemption Seminar," a VLA staff attorney will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of going nonprofit, the procedure for incorporating as a nonprofit and applying for federal tax-exempt status, and the costs of establishing a tax-emempt corporation in New York. Following this seminar, arts-related organizations can schedule an appointment with a VLA attorney for a consultation and referral to an attorney, who will handle their incorporation and tax exemption free of charge.

Admission is $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Seminar dates are Nov. 6 and 20, Dec. 4 and 18, Jan. 8 and 22, and Feb. 5 and 19, 1-3 pm.
