What’s Happening in NYC Dance This Week 9/25–10/1

Autumn in the city is an incredible time for finding new inspiration, teachers, workshops, season premieres, and even company auditions. We’ve got a little bit of everything ready for you to check out below. Grab your scarf and warm-ups...it’s time to fall for dance.

PERFORMANCES

Twyla Tharp Dance premieres “DYLAN LOVE SONGS,” a piece exploring love’s give and take at the Joyce Theater through Oct. 5. Along with Tharp’s new piece, the company will also perform two gems from the 1970s: “THE FUGE” and “THE RAGGEDY DANCES.” Purchase your tickets here.

New York City Ballet opens their season with Swan Lake, choreographed by Peter Martins after Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov, and George Balanchine. This stunning romantic tragedy is not one to miss. More information and tickets here.

As part of the 20172018 40th Anniversary Season at WP Theater, Monica Bill Barnes & Company presents their Off-Broadway debut “One Night Only (running as long as we can).” This finger-snapping, athletic performance is happening seven times a week and you don’t want to miss this dynamic duo! AUDITIONS

Open Dance Ensemble is seeking new members for the fall season. If you love to improvise, this may be a great opportunity for you to work with like-minded artists. If interested, send your materials to the email provided here.

Trulight Films seeks model/dancers for a hip-hop music video shoot on Sept. 30 in midtown. This is a paid opportunity with potential for future work. Send your materials in at the email provided here.

“The Ride” seeks professional male and female ballet dancers for a Drama Desk-nominated theatrical experience around the city. All performances are outside and dancers must be available weekends as well as be able to work the winter holidays. Pay is hourly. If interested, send your materials in at the email provided here.

LLMoves is seeking a tall dancer (must be 5’9” or taller) for upcoming paid shows and film projects this fall. Auditions will be held Sept. 22. Apply here on Backstage.

Vashti Dance Theater is seeking versatile contemporary and cultural dancers for their upcoming performance season. Dancers can send in their materials for consideration here.

CHOREOGRAPHIC OPPORTUNITIES

Peridance Capezio Center’s APAP applications are now open through Oct. 1. Over twenty choreographers and dance companies will be presented the weekend of Jan. 1214. Apply here.

THE CREATORS COLLECTIVE is seeking artists to participate in one or more of their fall 2017 events. Performances will take place Oct. through Dec. in Brooklyn. If you’re interested in presenting work, read up on more details here.

EVENTS

Interested in filmmaking for dance? Check out Gibney’s DTI Tech Tuesday for some introductory techniques in dance filmmaking. Here you will learn fundamental tools to explore cinematic and choreographic concepts in dance film.

CLASSES + WORKSHOPS

In collaboration with the French Institute Alliance Francaise, Movement Research hosts “Workshopping Corbeaux,” a participatory performance workshop series that will begin Sept. 26 at Abrons Arts Center. More information on how to join here.

Brooklyn Studios for Dance is offering a $5 ballet class every Saturday this fall. You can’t find a cheaper ballet class than this! More details here.

Always wanted to learn how to salsa? It’s not too late to start. BAILA Society has started a 10-week training series (with seven weeks left to jump in!) that will culminate in a performance at Peridance Capezio Center’s Blackbox Theater. More information here!

DANCE-RELATED JOBS
