Hello and welcome to one of our shoutouts for projects casting around the UK. A Lion In Winter
A Broadway classic, James Goldman’s 1966 play A Lion In Winter explores the personal and political trials of Henry II of England over Christmas in 1183. The play is being produced on the fringe for two Christmas performances in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Here’s a breakdown of the roles on offer:
King Henry II
Leading role King Henry II is for a male actor of any ethnicity aged 45–60. Despite being old by the standards of the time, he’s full of energy and wit.
Eleanor of Aquitaine
Eleanor of Aquitaine is for a female actor of any ethnicity aged 55–70. She’s a formidable Queen who, despite her love for Henry, is happy to plot for her favourite son to become successor.
Supporting role Alais Capet is for a female actor of any ethnicity aged 18–30. In love with Henry, she has nevertheless promised to marry whichever of his sons succeeds him.
John is for a male actor of any ethnicity aged 18–30. He’s the youngest son of Henry at just 16. He's immature and petulant – yet somehow still his father’s favourite.
Geoffrey is for a male actor of any ethnicity aged 18–30. The middle child of Henry and Eleanor, Geoffrey has come to accept he’s the least likely to take the throne.
Richard is for a male actor of any ethnicity aged 18–35. At 26, he’s the eldest son and a professional warrior.
The King of France Philip Capet is for a male actor of any ethnicity aged 18–30.
Rehearsals will take place on Monday and/or Tuesday evenings throughout November and December at the venue in St Katharine Docks, Tower Bridge, London.
A Lion In Winter will be performed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day from around 5pm at The Ivory Vaults, St Katharine Docks. Roles are paid £130 in total.
