Small class size; Interview is required; Ongoing
The premiere short term Los Angeles acting conservatory believes "to do anything well, one must do it every day; and one must do it extensively, guided by experts in that field." Favoring this daily concentrated approach, as well as the practical and effective over the self-serving and vague, Acting Corps offers the original Actors' Boot Camp in its brand-new, three-theatre facility in the NoHo Arts District. It is a four-week, every day, in-your-face Meisner-based acting program, which not only teaches this legendary technique but also applies it to cold reading and scene study. Classes are small, averaging 16 actors, so everyone works extensively in every class. All instructors are accomplished, currently working professionals with extensive on set and teaching experience. After the Actors' Boot Camp, some actors are invited to the Actors' Boot Camp II; eight weeks of deepening acting technique as actors learn about the industry and where they fit in, as well as what it's really like to work in front of the camera on a film and television set. Actors are encouraged throughout to attend the Daily Acting Workout: an hour per day, morning or evening, of Meisner exercises, monologues, and whatever sharpens an actor's instrument. For those working on specific career goals, there is an advanced program, a six-month program of study where actors work with instructors on achieving concrete creative and professional career goals. The advanced program culminates in a showcase attended by agents, managers, and casting directors. The Acting Corps seeks actors with some, little, or no professional experience who are ready to seriously train for film and television.

Class size varies; all levels, private coaching available; monthly free workshop is held for students to experience Grindlay's technique; ongoing and by session
Annie Grindlay is an actress, teacher, and most importantly someone who nurtures the artist within the actor. She began teaching in 1988 and opened her own studio in 2009. Grindlay's approach starts by  answering the question "what does it mean to be an artist" and builds from there. "I feel at times, Hollywood strips away the art and encourages a paint-by-numbers type of approach. I strive to change that." As the major studios continue to go with "sure bet" actors, Grindlay believes it is crucial that actors, more now than ever, walk into audition rooms with their imaginations flowing. She teaches that the writer puts fifty-percent on the page and the rest is up to the actor. Actors too are storytellers. Having a specific point of view about everything an actor says allows them to take ownership of the words and make authentic "me" not "my character" choices.

Actors are taught to invoke their own sense of truth in every role and to stress the ways in which personal experience can fire the imagination. Lawson is an award-winning actor-director with over 30-years' experience, having appeared in more than 50 films, 100 TV shows, and 50 plays. He has taught at the Beverly Hills Playhouse for 25 years. His acting approach is based upon moment to moment spontaneous work, that is inspired by imagination, passion, and purpose, driven by a sense of reality, intelligence and logic, grounded in the patience to listen, the willingness to be affected and the courage to ask the next question. Drawing from Stella Adler, who said "I don't teach actors to be actors, I teach people to be people," Lawson embraces a similar philosophy. He gets the actor to be as personal (drawing from their own life experience) as possible even though they may be playing characters far removed from themselves. Lawson teaches scene work as the basic platform of study.  Environmental exercises, picture exercises, song and dance exercises, improvisation, and other exercise models are used on an individual basis to supplement and support what is discovered through scene study. Lawson also offers a course titled, "The On-Camera Audition and Cold Reading Class," which provides DVD documentation to students by the course's end. $900 per 12-week course. A 16-week "Boot Camp" for advanced actors with industry experience is available for $1,200.

Now headed by Martin Barter, Mr. Meisner's assistant for over 12 years, the center teaches the Meisner technique in it's original two-year program the way Sandy taught it. Accelerated Five-week intensives are also offered, as well as graduate-level scene-study classes and screenwriting classes. Graduates have gone on to win ten Academy Awards, eight Emmys, and six Tonys.

he TOA conservatory program provides an exciting and stimulating training within a practical multi-media discipline and guides the student in fulfilling their potential as a professional actor in a highly competitive industry. Classes encourage self discovery as the basis of talent from which all good acting evolves. Students learn to work from individual truth and integrity. The physical skills of an actor are explored. Students develop flexibility to adapt voice and movement to meet the demands of script and character. Through scene study, character analysis and mask work, students lose fear, self consciousness, and inhibition. Actors learn to release the physiological barriers which prevent them from exploring the full emotional life of the character. As senior students near graduation, a series of public performances and an individually tailored showcase are held.

Actor Matthew Modine once noted Art Wolff was "one of the major artists" in his life. As a teacher, Wolff spent seven years on the faculty of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts; as a director, he's helmed 15 TV pilots, including "Seinfeld," and five Broadway plays including "Penn & Teller." For twenty-five years Wolff has taught, coached, or directed many of Hollywood's best know actors such as Kate Walsh, Joseph Gordon Levitt, and Dakota Fanning. Wolff believes "If you want to glow like a star, you have to walk through the fire, which means you have to work without a net to make bold and exciting choices. You have to make every scripted moment seem unscripted, you have to act with controlled abandon. My classes are ongoing, they're small, and everybody works each week, with sufficient time to work and rework the scenes which are from current television, film, and plays; many of them casting and being made or developed right now. I teach all my classes. If you study with me, you are taught by me. And I believe its the only class where students are served dinner." Two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn said Wolff "has a special gift for getting the best out of an actor's talent. He has the understanding of craft to build on the talent, and the generosity of spirit to encourage the confidence an actor needs to apply his craft to his talent."

The school provides guidance on the business aspects of acting, writing, and directing along with the artistic training necessary to book the job and continue to work in this highly competitive industry. Classes include auditioning for film and television, on-camera dynamics, Sanford Meisner technique, Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg techniques, commercial audition technique, "Character Preference" (the conservatory's signature course), improvisation, and intensive workshops. Industry professionals from some of Hollywood's most active agencies appear frequently in class curriculum schedules to guide students through the auditioning process and to share insights into current trends in areas such as résumé format, headshot styles, and job opportunities for the working actor. The conservatory says its programs go beyond the obvious and train the actor to develop all the emotional colors that exist within a character's life, resulting in a performance that is interesting, specific, and emotionally alive. School policy is to provide a warm and supportive atmosphere that encourages risk-taking, commitment, and discipline, which helps put actors to work in the theater, film, and television industry.
