Broadway legend Elaine Stritch is being sued by writer John Lahr
for claims of non-payment for collaborating on her one woman hit
Elaine Stritch at Liberty, according to the New York
Post.
Stritch, whose career spans from understudying Ethel Merman in Call Me Madame to winning an Emmy for playing Alec Baldwin's mother in 30 Rock, is being sued by Lahr for claims that he should be receiving royalties every time she performs the one woman show. Lahr is the theater critic for the New Yorker, and son of Bert Lahr, the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz. The credits for Elaine Stritch At Liberty read "constructed by John Lahr, reconstructed by Elaine Stritch." The show ran Off-Broadway at the Public Theater and on at the Neil Simon Theater during the 2001-02 season and won two Drama Desk Awards and a Tony Award for best special theatrical event. Stritch, known for her salty personality and gravelly voice, stated to the Post that Lahr "made it possible for me to do my show, and for this I am indebted to him for life." She continued that "I have nothing bad to say about him, I don't want to have dinner with him tonight, but I'm very fond of him." Lahr did not specify the amount of damages, but he claims he is due "restitution and 20 percent of gross."
