Southern California Theatre Guide Listings 2008

Article Image

Every day actors and other artists arrive in Los Angeles, lured by the prospect of employment in film and television. And every day, it seems, another of these folks discovers one of Southern California's best-kept secrets: its thriving year-round theatre scene, which by our count regularly mounts more annual productions than New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco combined. It's a strong and growing community, and increasingly it's also becoming a bona fide local industry, with growing audiences and numbers of union contracts.

We at Back Stage West have been doing our small part to support that industry with this annual theatre guide, an indispensable listing of theatres, companies, and production services for theatre professionals: playwrights and composers, directors, designers, and actors.

We hope you find this year's edition useful. If you notice that anything is missing or incorrect in these listings, please let us know so we can get it right next time. And keep us posted about moves, closures, hires, fires -- and, of course, your opening nights.

We'll see you at the theatre.

KEY TO SYMBOLS & ABBREVIATIONS:

R: Theatre is available for rent.

R-VA: Rental with variable availability.

H&R: Headshots and résumés accepted.

M: Accepts manuscripts. Include self-addressed, stamped envelope.

D: Charges dues.

DEFINITIONS:

Membership: Theatre maintains an active company of actors and generally casts from the company members.

INDEPENDENT THEATRE COMPANIES

These companies either tour, rent space as needed, or are in temporary residence at a specific theatre named in parentheses. As such, they are typically not the folks to call about rentals.

Submitting manuscripts to theatrical companies: Before sending a manuscript to a theatrical company, writers should send a query composed of a synopsis, cast breakdown, a few pages of sample dialogue, the playwright's résumé, and information about if or when and where the play has been performed. Include a SASE.

VALET

If you are renting from a theatre without a parking lot or its own valet service, you may opt to hire a valet service on your own. Most companies provide valets at a rate between $13-$18 per hour per attendant -- that's for free valet parking for your guests. If you decide to let your patrons pay for valet service, then those fees are deducted from your prearranged price. Negotiate that in advance, as some companies do not charge parking guests.

The number of attendants will depend on the number of patrons you expect: typically one attendant for each 15 cars. In either case, make sure the company is insured. Also, when you call, have as much information as possible regarding not only your needs but an idea of the area around the theatre: If you can make the attendants' job easier by finding a nearby lot for them to park in, they will often give you a discount on the hourly rate. Some companies need as many as three weeks or more advance notice; many need only a few days. It is always a good idea to check with the theatre owner to see if he or she can recommend a valet service company.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Obviously we can't list every stage manager, set builder, lighting technician, etc. in Los Angeles. But we offer -- as part of our weekly publication -- a service to any theatre to list any stage tech job openings it has for a $20 fee per notice. So remember, if you are going to put on a show and you have a need for a cast member or a technical person, be sure to get your information to us by 1:30 p.m. Friday for the following Thursday's issue of Back Stage West. Fill out a casting/crew notice form, which may be mailed, faxed, or brought in person to the offices of Back Stage West, Attn: Casting, 5055 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036. Fax: (323) 965-1340. Email: bswcasting@backstage.com. For more information, contact Casting Editor Cassie Carpenter at (323) 525-2035.

When you've got witches who need to boil and toil and trouble, you'll need a cauldron, some dry ice, and probably some good wax noses and warts. Eerie lighting and a blasted heath will help -- and the sound of howling banshees wouldn't hurt.

You get the idea. Here's a list of places to go in the L.A. area to rent the right set piece, light instrument, sound setup, natty period threads, etc.

The list was compiled with a preference for businesses that regularly cater to local theatres and sometimes even offer theatres a money-saving break. And that's a special effect everyone would like to brew up.

SCRIPT/PLAYWRIGHT RESOURCES

What's all this about producing? Say you're a playwright looking for as many mail slots as possible in which to deposit your polished gem of a script, and/or as many groups of like-minded scribes with which to gather and complain -- er, share information about your craft -- as well as find out about lucrative opportunities to practice that craft. Go ahead, say it: "I'm a playwright...."

In short, this list is for you.
