New York City’s LGBT community is getting a little backwards come Monday.
The 11th annual Broadway Backwards event will take place March 21 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (the current home of “Kinky Boots”). Produced by fundraising org Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the evening of revelry will feature some of Broadway’s finest, and benefit both BC/EFA and The Center, which provides members of the LGBT community health and wellness resources.
Tony winner Julie White, a longtime advocate and supporter of BC/EFA, will bring her singular charm and hilarity to the festivities as host. The evening will feature a series of favorite show tunes, with male singers performing songs originally written for women and vice versa.
Among the Broadway veterans joining White onstage are Andre De Shields, Beth Malone, Lesli Margherita, Brad Oscar, Ken Page, Krysta Rodriguez, Emily Skinner, and Tony Yazbeck. Telly Leung and Tituss Burgess, both of whom performed at last year’s show, will return, and it was recently announced that Chita Rivera, Stephanie J. Block, Tony Sheldon, Laura Michelle Kelly, and Danielle Brooks will be getting in on the fun. Broadway Backwards creator Robert Bartley will return again to direct the show.
Broadway Backwards 2015 raised a record $466,717 for BC/EFA and The Center. Since its inception as a grassroots concert at The Center in 2006, the event has amassed more than $2.4 million.
