Actors from ABC and Nickelodeon comedies won big at the 37th Annual Young Artist Awards.
“Black-ish” stars Miles Brown and Marsai Martin won best actor and best actress on a TV series, respectively, for their supporting work as the youngest children to Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross on the ABC sitcom. The series earned two additional nominations for Marcus Scribner in the leading young actor, 14–21 category, and the ensemble featuring the aforementioned actors, and Yara Shahidi.
ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” picked up kudos for its ensemble (Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler, Ian Chen), and for Luna Blaise’s work in the recurring young actress, 14–21 category.
The ceremony, which took place Sunday, March 13 in the Empire Ballroom at the Sportsmen’s Lodge Events Center in Studio City, Calif., presented awards in over three dozen categories, and also included wins for Nickelodeon actors.
Matt Cornett (recurring young actor, 14–21) and Rio Mangini (recurring young actor, 13 and under) won for “Bella and the Bulldogs,” while Piper Keesee (guest starring young actress, 11–13) and Laura Krystine (recurring young actress, 13 and under) received awards for “100 Things to Do Before High School.” Nicole Samantha Huff took her young actress in a TV movie, miniseries, special, or pilot category win for another high school–set series, “Degrassi: Don’t Look Back.” Forrest Deal won the same category for males for his role in the NBC TV movie about a country music legend, “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors”
The feature film winners were widespread across several films.
Isabella Crovetti-Cramp (supporting young actress, 13 and under) won for portraying a young Jennifer Lawrence in David O. Russell’s “Joy.” Meanwhile Forrest Goodluck (supporting young actor, 14–21) picked up an award as Leonardo DiCaprio’s son Hawk in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Oscar-winning “The Revenant.”
Liv Southard (“Breaking Legs”) and Michael Grant (“Where Hope Grows”) won leading actor awards in the 14–21 age bracket, and Kaitlyn Dias won in the 12–21 young actress voiceover category for her work as Riley on “Inside Out.”
Live theater performance recognition went to Exodus Lale of “The Lion King” and Eva de Zwart of “The Velveteen Rabbit.”
Previous award recipients include former child actors and Oscar winners Christian Bale and Reese Witherspoon, and Emmy Award winner Neil Patrick Harris.
