This week has seen major casting announcements come out of Telsey & Co. for its “Hairspray: Live!” on NBC: Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Maybelle, Harvey Fierstein in drag as Edna Turnblad, Martin Short as her husband Wilbur Turnblad, and Derek Hough as Corny Collins. But the search for “Hairspray” hero Tracy Turnblad continues!
Nearly 800 girls—including some from Europe and Australia!—came out for the role of a lifetime when open calls hit New York City Sunday, April 24. If you have dreams of following in “The Wiz: Live!” breakout Shanice Williams’s footsteps but were unable to make it on Sunday, Telsey & Co. is now accepting video auditions for Tracy!
The ideal candidate will be a heavyset belter who can convincingly play high-school age. Interested actors should be prepared to sing “Good Morning Baltimore” a cappella. The casting notice describes Tracy as an outgoing, unstoppable, and good-hearted teenager with a “vibrant, loveable, high-spirited personality who loves to dance”—she has dreams of dancing on “The Corny Collins Show,” after all! Additional info can be found on Backstage’s casting notice.
