The Broadway Green Alliance recently announced the launch of their College Captain program. The program will provide colleges with resources to green their theater productions. Currently, Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) runs the Broadway Green Captain program, which links productions with volunteer Green Captains who can improve the environmental performance of their respective shows. Green Captains range from stars to crew members. The new college program was announced at the 2013 United States Institute for Theatre Technology annual conference.
Each newly designated College Green Captain will be given a list of environmentally friendly practices that can be easily and immediately implemented; many are already used for Broadway productions. Through the BGA network, collegiate Green Captains will be able to ask theater professionals for advice on everything from greener lighting to using rechargeable batteries.
“We are thrilled to work with college theatre professionals and students throughout the country, sharing greener practices used on Broadway and at other schools,” said BGA co-chair Charlie Deull in a statement. “We look forward to engaging with this generation of future theatre professionals during their college years.”
