Los Angeles area high school students have another route to the Broadway stage.
The Pantages Theatre and Nederlander Organization are inviting local high schools to participate in an actors' showcase that will see the best male and female performers take home $1,000 plus an all-expenses-paid trip to New York.
The competition, slated for May 19 at the Pantages, is the local award ceremony for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy’s, which takes place each year at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre in New York City.
While in Manhattan, the Los Angeles-area winners of the second annual Jerry Herman Awards will also get five days of private coaching, master classes, and rehearsals with theater professionals.
That will help them prepare for the grand finale of the competition, where they'll appear before a panel of industry experts. The chosen finalists will compete for the Jimmy Awards for Best Performance by an Actress and Actor as part of the National High School Musical Theater Awards, which culminate in a performance at the Minskoff.
All high schools in the Los Angeles-area are invited to participate. Representatives may still register their musical theater productions for consideration by filling out the online participation form.
Awards are also given out for Best Musical and Best Choreography, in addition to the acting honors. Winners merit scholarships, professional advancement and other prizes.
