Wondering what’s on the development table this week? One of Broadway’s hottest tickets, “The Lehman Trilogy” may soon be heading to the small screen as an adaptation of the saga is in the works. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming project.
An International TV Adaptation of “The Lehman Trilogy” Is in Development
It’s gone from London to New York (and back again to both cities), but now “The Lehman Trilogy” may soon be getting a small-screen close-up. The three-act saga written by Stefano Massini, which is currently running on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre until at least Jan. 2, is now being developed as a TV series. Italy’s Fandango has reportedly acquired an option for TV rights for an international audience. The five-hour play, which “follows [the three Lehman] brothers from their arrival in America in search of a new life, to the collapse of the firm they established, to the resulting financial crisis — the largest in history.” was adapted to its English language version by Ben Power, and the currently running production is being helmed by stage and screen director Sam Mendes. In an exclusive with Variety, Fandango chief Domenico Procacci declined to comment on how the Fandango team will adapt the play for television but did note that Massini has adapted the material into a novel and also praised the writer for his ability “to tell so effectively a story that doesn’t have any Italian elements, since most of it takes place in the U.S.” No casting has been announced at this time and it is unclear if any of the stage stars (Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley, Ben Miles, and Adrian Lester) will make appearances in a televised version.
